Writing about science for everyone.
I am an award-winning science writer and fact-checker who transforms complex research into clear, compelling stories that matter for everyday people. My current work focuses on cancer communications, but occasional freelance assignments take me on journeys across the full spectrum of scientific discovery, from technology to the environment. My work has appeared in Discover Magazine, Astronomy Magazine, and other media outlets and academic journals. I hold an MA in science writing from Johns Hopkins University.
I grew up in Peoria, Illinois where I nurtured a deep curiosity for the world around me. I loved writing and learning about the natural world through science. After graduating from Indiana University with a BA in biology, I worked as a lab technician and, later, an environmental educator.
I rediscovered my passion for writing after settling in Bellingham, Washington, where a serendipitous friendship with a science writer showed me I could blend my two most entrenched interests. I currently work as a scientific writer for Publicis Sapient, where I am contracted with the National Institutes of Health to deliver cancer communications to the public. When not at work, I enjoy playing my fiddle in local Celtic jam sessions, riding about town on my 1983 Trek bicycle, and putting on square dances for the community.
“Nice lede graf, good close. Sources from around the world — impressive. Excellent work.”
“Your ability to take a heavy, technically complex cancer topic and make it accessible for lay audiences with just the right authoritative yet sensitive tone continually impresses me.”
